Hungry Man Fish Cakes

Let me start by telling you I love all sea foods. Unfortunately, they no longer all love me back. I have developed a rather sever allergic reaction to crab and cod. One shelled fish and one not. It’s rather bizarre and bothersome, especially for a Brit like myself who loves fish and chips. So I have had to find an alternative that I could still enjoy. Enter stage left, Barramundi & Red Snapper Fish Cakes. This easy fish cake recipe is elegant enough for a date night dinner yet easy enough for a quick evening meal. Barramundi is considered a sustainable sea bass. Also know as Asian Sea Bass, this fish has a mild slightly sweet flavor that I have come to enjoy immensely and it is a lot more cost effective than actual Chilean sea bass. So for this recipe I have combined the flaky flesh of Red snapper with larger chunks of Barramundi to create one very satisfying fish cake.

  • 5 oz Barramundi Fillet diced
  • 12 oz red snapper fillet (flesh only) deboned, skin removed
  • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 small shallot can substitute green onions
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tsp fish sauce
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp Avocado Oil


  1. Add oil to a skillet on medium high heat to warm up

  2. Add all ingredients to a bowl and thoroughly combine

  3. Seperate your fish mixture into four. These can be made into 8, but 4 is more of an adult size fish cake

  4. Brown your cakes until golden brown, about 4 minutes per side. They should move without resistence. If you feel resistence leave them to continue browning and check at 1 minute intervals

However, some find preparing fish intimidating. This easy recipe of Barramundi & Red Snapper fish cakes is so simple to make and super tasty.
